Squirrels in Uniform
I am interested in the divisions of space within the City of London. London is divided into numerous geographic or social spaces: wards, ridings, neighbourhoods, and ‘communities of interest’. City maps, for example, designate parks, rivers, wetlands, and unaltered natural features as “open space,” a title I find both fascinating and confusing. The “open spaces” in London are well inhabited by communities of squirrels. Their environments are equally governed by city planning as they are bound by roads, walkways, and other constructed impositions on their environment. This project involved creating a series of color codified uniforms for squirrels designating the ward in which they lived.
